For Ages 0 – 3 years

Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star by Jerry Pinkney This is a wonderful rendition of a child’s favorite lullaby. Join a chipmunk (very familiar animal to New England children) as he explores his natural world. He see stars in many of nature’s wonders….the dew of a spider’s web, a dandelion’s fluff. This book answers the question, “Where can your dreams take you?” The illustrations are stunning and the verses are lovely.

ZooZical by Judy Sierra Illustrated by Marc Brown. Here is the team that brought us Wild About Books. It is set in Springfield (a tribute to Dr Seuss, I’m sure) where winter doldrums are getting the zoo animals and visitors down. Two hippos start a dance and all the other animals join in. They work together to present a ZooZical. The verses rhyme and are great for reading aloud. The illustrations are adorable. This book is great fun!

The Emerald Atlas by John Stephens This book is the story of three “orphans”, Kate, Michael, and Emma. They are shuffled off to an orphanage in a strange place where they find an enchanted atlas. The atlas sends them back in time where they try to right a wrong and save a community. This book is filled with adventure and mystery. There is an evil countess, along with monsters, dwarves, a great underground battle and also my favorite character, Miss Sallow, the housekeeper. This would make a great family read aloud. I listened to the audiobook narrated by Jim Dale and it was brilliant!

For All Ages

Every Thing On It by Shel Silverstein. This is a collection of never before published poems and drawings by an amazing author. This collection does not disappoint if Mrs Roy’s and Mrs. Taft’s fourth grade students are any kind of judges.

For Parents

A Family of Readers by Roger Sutton and Martha V. Parravano. Sutton and Parravano are editors for The Horn Book Magazine and have compiled essays and interviews with children’s authors and other professionals to discuss reading and books. The book is divided into 4 sections; Reading to Them, Reading with Them, Reading on Their Own, and Leaving Them Alone. I’ve just browsed it but it has some great book lists and I love the Unlucky Arithmetic Thirteen Ways to Raise a Nonreader on page 103. This definitely goes in my next book order!

Don’t forget to check out our new kits (children’s books and CDs), Playaways, and audiobooks in the Children’s Department. They are great fun to listen to while driving on family vacations in the summer. Here is a great article on the benefits of listening to audiobooks.
